Extraordinary Jewels
The first in a new series of weekly jewel facts- just for fun!
I’ve been collecting jewelry books since I was in college, checking every secondhand bookstore I’ve ever come across. I’ve managed to amass a serious collection, and it’s one of my prized possessions. Each week, I have decided to share an interesting fact from one of the books, and I’ll include a link to buy the book as well, if you would like to read the whole thing for yourself!
The first one is below, and it’s from “Extraordinary Jewels”, by John Traina.
Check back here once a week for an update!
“To satisfy another customer, the workshop fashioned a triple-decker egg-and-bacon sandwich- an assignment that must have tested the imagination and skills of the redoubtable Asprey staff. But they rose to the occasion. It seems that there was a Texas millionaire whose favorite lunch was a three-layered sandwich of eggs, with a twist of bacon on top. While doing business in Switzerland, he complained that he could not find a local restaurant that could make a decent high-rise sandwich. The Swiss company with which he was doing business quietly contacted Asprey. Just before the Texan was to depart, for home, he received a perfect triple-decker sandwich with eggs and a twist of bacon- in silver gilt. Asprey’s craftsmen had actually toasted three slices of bread in the workshop, fried the eggs, and cooked and crisped the bacon. Then they assembled the ingredients into a sandwich, made a mold, and cast it. The silver-gilt sandwich now rests on the Texas millionaire’s desk.”
